Well this is it my first post on wordpress. Initially I was intending to import all my posts from blogger here, but then i decided against it. This is in part due to the fact that i like some parts of blogger so this is a sort of independent blog. Well not entirely independent but i promise to keep this one more error free(maybe except capitalising my i’s since there’s just too many at times).
So well for my first post just want to ramble on about 2 things i thought of today.
First thing is about paper. If you read my other blog i was ranting about the long receipt by Hong Kong Cafe. Well it was twice the length required. Also judging by the diners around me(a estimate not accurate) it would seem that the order about the same amount per 4 adults. Well it is an utter waste of paper to keep printing the other and this branch’s address on the receipt. The length of paper used is about 5 cm by 12 cm. So about 12 of the print outs might make an A4 or so. Imagine the amount of paper and in turn the number of trees saved by choosing not to print out the address. I think that the namecards there are sufficient as those are only taken by people who are genuinely interested in the cafe’s other branch locations!
On the the other matter which lies closer to Singaporeans’ heart is money(and its other related issues like taxes and income inequality). I think it is time for our government to review some of the policies taken. Well few things. Our gini coefficient is rising and continues to do so despite the many measure taken. For non economics students that means the poor is poorer and rich richer. It rose from 0.446 in 1998 to 0.533 in 2004 (refer to http://www.singstat.gov.sg/news/news/ghs2.pdf)
One thing that makes me wonder is that why is our government decreasing progressive tax and increasing regressive tax like GST? Though we are trying to reduce our income disparity via transfer payments but it think these payments at times are not enough. Like what my mum say at times, before you look overseas to see who to help, help our local folks who are suffering first!
True that we need to balance between promoting investment and income equality but i think figures can be tweak a little. Well such things do affect us by driving up the cost of living. We rose from 17th most expensive city to 14th (refer to http://www.finfacts.ie/costofliving.htm) Guess there’s no one quick solution to all these problems…
